Barnegat Bay Lighthouse for Elsie
My Nana loved lighthouses. On her Christmas treem dozens of lighthouse beacons twinkled through the evergreen branches. Her annual calendar depicted various notable lighthouses. One of the most iconic lighthouses in New Jersey, where I grew up, is the Barnegat Bay Lighthouse. In a search for photos of it online, I stumbled upon a minimalist illustration I knew I wanted to use for my quilt pattern inspiration. After drawing it in PowerPoint and the adjusting the colors based on what I had in my studio, I made a grid an pieced each section accordingly. It was a lovely challenge bring this design to life with fabric. The sections consist of rectangles, squares, concentric circles, tapered strips, and a large organic curve. It was quilted with simple horizontal lines to let the design shine. The bright binding surrounds the quilt top and was hand sewn during a long road trip that cut through Central Oregon. I loved spending that extra time with this quilt, thinking of my grandma and special memories of times we've spent together. I mailed it to her upon our return and she was able to spend her final days with this quilt by her side. She likely didn't know exactly who it was from or why she had it, but I know she felt the love of my family. There's just something about handmade quilts that provide a level of comfort like no other.
