Out-side
This small wall hanging consists of the full rainbow of bright colors. Its design was based on the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon, with notable features of Beacon Rock and Crown Vista Point. A sun in the east rises behind the Cascade mountain range. Each color is a raw applique piece, meaning the edges are raw and slightly frayed. Custom quilting mimics the shape of the mountains, flowing river, and wavy sky, all in coordinating colors of thread. A floral quilting design borders the river's edge, while a sunburst design is seen in the sky. A skinny red border was hand sewn on the back. The backing fabric is a crosshatch black-and-white print and corner pockets were sewn onto the back to hold a dowel for hanging.
This quilt was made as part of a gallery of rainbow quilts, displayed by the Portland Modern Quilt Guild at Powell's Books in downtown Portland. A custom label was sewn on the back with the simple story: the outdoors was made for all.
