Trailing Jade
This wall hanging quilt features a hanging plant surrounded by an archway of triangles. A hand quilted "rope" using gold thread holds up the textured peach pot. The same earth toned colors that make the arch are also used in a color blocked way around the quilt's binding. The binding was hand sewn on the back. Yellow fabric with green spots cover the entire back which also includes corner pockets for easy hanging with a wooden dowel. To keep the eye focused on the design itself, the quilting was sewn with thread to match the taupe background. Not only do the lines curve in an S shape from one corner to the other for 2/3 of the top, the bottom right curves in an S shape in the opposite direction and meets (but not overlaps) with the rest of the quilting. While it takes a lot more time to quilt this way, it's a unique touch for a unique quilt. This quilt was hung outside for the 2024 Outdoor Sisters Quilt Show held in Sisters, OR, alongside over a dozen other plant-themed quilts.
More on the design creation: My local quilt guild's theme for the 2024 Outdoor Sisters Quilt Show was "Plant Life". I had a vision of creating a quilt for someone who may have a hard time keeping a real plant alive. During the time I was drafting up a pattern, I was also deep into AI discovery tools at work and so tried a few to see how well they knew quilting structure. Spoiler: they didn't (yet). Using Microsoft Designer, the tool I found most helpful at this time, I iterated on the input prompt: "a modern quilt pattern that features a trailing jade plant in a hanging round pot in the quilt design itself, neutral warm colors, a narrow border with half square triangles". I loved the colors, the idea of the archway, the way the triangles and shapes along the border blended into the background. I could not get the tool to create a plant that was traditionally pieced. So I found some inspiration online for various leaves and created my own version of the plant hanging in the corner of my living room. I pieced most of this quilt during a retreat in Astoria, OR.
